Oberlin High School, formerly known as Christian College, has a rich and inspiring history that dates back to January 7, 1946. Located in West Rural St. Andrew, approximately 11 miles from Constant Spring, Jamaica, the institution began with a humble enrollment of just five students. It was founded by the Disciples of Christ in Jamaica, now part of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.
In 1955, the school underwent a significant transformation, adopting the name Oberlin High School in honor of John Frederic Oberlin, a distinguished educator and pastor associated with Oberlin College in the United States. His legacy of educational advancement and community development continues to inspire the institution.
A pivotal milestone followed in 1957 when the school began receiving government financial support, officially becoming a grant-aided high school. This transition enabled the expansion of its facilities and the enhancement of its educational offerings.
Over the years, successive administrations have remained committed to improving both the quality of education and the overall student experience. Central to the school’s philosophy is the belief that every child possesses unique talents and abilities, and it is the institution’s mission to nurture and develop that potential.
Today, Oberlin High School serves a vibrant community of over 1,800 students, supported by a dedicated team of educators and staff. The current administration continues to uphold the school’s foundation of Christian discipline while fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. With a strong emphasis on academic excellence, personal growth, and active student engagement, Oberlin High School remains a respected pillar of learning and development within Jamaica’s educational landscape.
